Vchynice-Tetov Timber Canal

18th century engineering wonder and timber gate bridge on Vydra

Vchynice-Tetov Timber Canal

About the Location & Route

Built between 1799 and 1801 by engineer Josef Rosenauer to float logs around the unnavigable boulder-strewn canyon of the river Vydra.

Trip Highlights:

  • Covered timber bridge Rechle
  • Perfect cycling track
  • Gentle flat terrain
  • Historic engineering monument

Constructed over 200 years ago, this water canal bypassed the rough, rocky stretches of the Vydra River to transport timber towards Prague. The route begins at Rechle, a picturesque covered timber rack bridge across the river. Today, the flat, gentle path alongside the canal serves as one of the most beloved and relaxing walking and cycling routes in Šumava.
